Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the legal requirements for pool fencing in Australia?

In Australia, pool fencing is governed by state legislation and must comply with the Australian Standard AS1926.1 – Safety Barriers for Swimming Pools. The law requires all private pools (in-ground and above-ground) to be enclosed by a compliant barrier that restricts access, especially to children under five. Key requirements include:

The fence must be at least 1.2 metres high at every point.

The gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence cannot exceed 100mm.

Vertical bars must not be more than 100mm apart.

Climbable objects must be at least 900mm away from the outside of the fence.

Pool gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latches located at least 1.5 metres from the ground.

These laws apply across most Australian states, though slight variations may occur between jurisdictions. Non-compliance can result in fines or legal liability in the event of an accident.

  • What type of pool fencing is best for safety and durability?

When choosing a pool fence, safety and durability should be top priorities. Aluminium fencing is a popular option due to its rust resistance, low maintenance, and long lifespan. It’s also available in a variety of powder-coated colours, which makes it suitable for a wide range of home styles. Glass pool fencing, both frameless and semi-frameless, offers a modern aesthetic and allows for clear visibility of the pool area, which can be an added safety benefit for supervising children. While glass may require more regular cleaning, it is strong and designed to meet safety standards. Steel fencing is another option, although it requires regular maintenance to prevent corrosion, especially in coastal areas. The best choice depends on your climate, budget, and design preference, but all pool fences must comply with safety regulations regardless of material.

  • How close can pool fencing be to the water’s edge?

Pool fencing can generally be installed quite close to the water’s edge, as long as it meets the requirements of AS1926.1. There is no specific minimum distance required between the fence and the pool itself, but the fence must fully enclose the pool area and prevent direct, unsupervised access from the house or yard. The key consideration is not proximity to the water, but the effectiveness of the barrier in deterring entry by young children. The fencing should be clear of climbable objects and must not incorporate features that can act as footholds. In many modern pool designs, particularly those with glass fencing, the barrier is installed just 200–300mm from the edge of the pool to maintain aesthetic appeal while staying compliant with the law.
